LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The grandmother of California’s newborn octuplets faces the threat of foreclosure on the house she has shared with her daughter and six of her grandchildren, property records revealed on Wednesday.
According to a mortgage default notice filed last week with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office, Angela Suleman is more than $23,000 behind in payments on her house in the Los Angeles suburb of Whittier, an agency spokesman said.
The default notice was first made public when a copy of the document, giving Suleman three months to settle her debt in order to avoid foreclosure, was posted on the celebrity news website TMZ.com.
The papers indicate Suleman last made a payment on the three-bedroom house in May 2008 and has filed for bankruptcy.
Texas-based debt collection agency NDEx West, operating on behalf of mortgage lender IndyMac Federal Bank, declined comment and Suleman could not immediately be reached for comment.
Her daughter, Nadya, 33, jobless and receiving food stamps, drew international headlines and a torrent of public ridicule after giving birth January 26 to octuplets conceived through in vitro fertilization.
That criticism intensified when it was learned she already had six children, ages 2 to 7, that she was collecting disability checks for three of them, and that they all were living with the grandmother.
Angela Suleman also has complained publicly of the financial burden and voiced skepticism about her daughter’s ability to care for 14 children.
The public backlash grew so hostile that Nadya Suleman — dubbed “octo-mom” in the tabloid press — went into seclusion with her six older kids last week due to death threats, according to a publicity firm hired by the family.
Spokesman Michael Furtney, whose firm has since severed ties with Suleman because of the threats, said she and her children recently moved back in with the grandmother.

Nadya should have invested her settlement money on a permanent mental facility stay.

I feel sorry for Nadya’s mother she may lose her home all because her daughter is a moron.

I don’t feel sorry for her. She knew she couldn’t afford anymore children because she couldn’t afford the ones she had already. She made a reckless and irresponsible decision and I have no sympathy for her. I feel terrible for her children and parents but she knew what she was doing. Loving your children is great but bringing that many into the world when you have no source of income is just crazy!

Those children should be removed from that stupid horrible ‘mother’. I feel sorry for her parents but perhaps this will mean that they can get back a life of their own if the house is repossessed. Perhaps a house could be set aside for these children, not a children’s home but something like the house that another famous USA couple have who also have a very large family where all the children’s names begin with J ?? Those people are proper parents and give their children something that these others will lack, proper love. The ‘mother’ should not benefit financially from having all those babies.

And she spent her entire 160,000.00 settlement on the procedure! Unreal, she should have applied it to the mortgage. But then, the world knows she is a total idiot. But all she needs to do is the talk show circuit and she can pay it off or buy a bigger house.

I feel very sorry for all of these children. Perhaps a famous and very wealthy celebrity can at least help these poor kids out with a home, a nanny (or maybe 3 nannies) and some positive role models.

The grandmother should have put her foot down and told her daughter to help with the mortgage versus allowing her to spend her money on the fertility doctor.
If the house is foreclosed, Nadya will be allowed to live on the streets, but her kids won’t.
So maybe in the end, it’s a positive thing.
At least those kids will either be in foster care, or she will be forced to sign them over to the state so they can be adopted out.

I only have sympathy for the children. The woman is cruel in a sense; you shouldn’t put lives onto this earth who you can’t fully cater for. More people isn’t always better.

I have to feel a little sorry for Nadya, she is very obviously mentally disturbed and is trying to fulfill something that is missing in her life by having this many children when she can’t support them. I also saw on Dr Phil that she may have had plastic surgery to try and look like Angelina Jolie, so she may thing that she is trying to catch Brad Pitt or something. The doctor that did the procedure on her deserves more of our contempt. He impregnated her with 6 embryos when she already had 6 children at home with no way to support them. Her mother and the father of the children begged him not to do it. He should have at least sent her for psychiatric eveluation. She obviously needs psych help and whether she should be allowed to raise these children is a question that I don’t know the answer to.

I do not feel an ounce of sympathy for Nadya, all I feel is anger. She has destroyed her mother’s life and the lives of 14 children before many of them have even started to talk.

No one gets to live anywhere for free. The lady has got to be mentally challenged, she is in no condition to care for those children and you talk about food stamps????she has 3 children that she’s collecting money from for autisim and mentally slow. She should have known what the chances were as far as how healthy those newborns will be. She’s stupid and craves attention. Does she think she is the only women in the world that needs to keep the gene pool going?”

I feel bad for the grandmother and children, but definitely not the mother. She chose to have 8 children even though she was unemployed and broke with 6 young children already, I’m not going to feel bad for her because she has to face the consequences of that.
